James Scott Bovitz
J. Scott Bovitz and Susan M. Spitzer formed Bovitz & Spitzer in 1991. Bovitz & Spitzer is a bankruptcy law firm.
Our office is about nine blocks from the bankruptcy courthouse in downtown Los Angeles. We appear in bankruptcy courts in the Central District of California: Los Angeles; Santa Ana; Riverside; Woodland Hills (the San Fernando Valley); and Santa Barbara (the Northern Division).
Bovitz & Spitzer represents business debtors, business and consumer creditors, law firms, asset purchasers, and other interested parties in bankruptcy cases (chapters 7, 11 and 13). Bovitz & Spitzer regularly serves as "local counsel" to attorneys from outside the jurisdiction and California law firms without bankruptcy departments.
Bovitz & Spitzer handles a variety of contested matters and bankruptcy litigation (adversary proceedings) in bankruptcy cases (chapters 7, 11, and 13). For example, we represent clients in automatic stay, preference, fraudulent transfer, lien priority, dischargeability, objection to discharge, and exemption litigation.
We handle bankruptcy appeals before the district court, the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
We are involved with pre-bankruptcy matters, assignments for the benefit of creditors, asset protection, and exemption planning.
Bovitz & Spitzer handles matters arising under the Uniform Commercial Code (regarding the attachment, perfection, priority, and foreclosure of UCC liens on personal property).
We advise on the legal, ethical and design aspects of law firm web sites and legal technology.
Our firm advises individuals about their bankruptcy options. Thus, Bovitz & Spitzer serves as a "debt relief agency" under the bankruptcy laws. When appropriate, Bovitz & Spitzer helps people file for bankruptcy relief under the Bankruptcy Code. Prospective debtors should note that you: should not incur more debt in contemplation of bankruptcy; and do not have to employ an attorney to file bankruptcy. Please see the discussion about "debt relief agencies" on our site.
If Bovitz & Spitzer agrees to take on your case, we will enter into a written contract (a retainer agreement) with you. Our retainer agreement will disclose our fees and specify the job which we will undertake for you.
Usually, there is no charge for an initial telephone call regarding a prospective legal matter. If we tentatively accept your case on the telephone, we normally set up a meeting to discuss strategy and tactics in more detail. Our rates change from time to time, so please call to confirm our current rates. Sorry, but Bovitz & Spitzer cannot accept credit cards.
