With businesses everywhere hunkering down to weather the economic storm, so are many law firms. As it turns out, Bingham was built for this storm.

Over the past decade, we've been thinking things through, targeting our energies, and managing how and where we grew - and in the process, assembling a portfolio of practices that is serving our clients well in this upside-down world.

How did we become a leader in a variety of legal disciplines, two of which - financial restructuring and securities regulation - are at ground zero of the crisis?

Although we'd like to claim we saw it all coming and prepared for it in detail, the truth is actually much simpler - we followed some basic principles.

These principles guided us as we invested extensively in talent; expanded selectively in global financial centers like New York, London and Tokyo; earned a reputation as a go-to firm in key disciplines; and developed a workplace that has been widely and repeatedly recognized as one of the best.

Bingham is stronger than we have ever been. While we are not immune to economic pressures, we are not distracted by them either. That means our lawyers and staff can continue to focus on the needs of our clients - and do it with a sense of stability and confidence.

We've always believed that investing in the changing needs of our clients is ultimately the best investment in ourselves. So we are already preparing for the next business cycle.

It's all about seeing through the clutter to focus on what's important. Over the years, that skill has allowed us to develop a clear sense of direction. Right now, it drives our ability to work efficiently as well as effectively for our clients. And as we look forward to the upturn in the business cycle, it's helping us get our clients ready for whatever comes next.
